It's been a while since I've shown you what I've been up to...

First of all, I now have a fully functional website! Find me at www.tanyahendrie.co.uk I'd love to know what you think of it.

Secondly, I have been working mainly on my submission for D&AD which is understandably top secret right now. I've been working on rebranding 17 cosmetics and as soon as I can, I'll post images. It's hard work but I'm enjoying the fast paced project!

Other than that, I've mostly been concentrating on having solid roots for my work this semester. I posted photos of my studio space at the beginning of the year but I thought I'd show you what it really looks like most of the time!

A Day in the Life

Here's what I was up to on February 1st, 2012

I've been waking up without needing my alarm recently which is good. First thing I did was check the weather and was met with this particularly gloomy view.

I have been trying to avoid buying new clothes and instead have been coming up with new outfit combinations using things I already own. This was one of the more successful attempts made by pinning the lace bib of one of my tops to the neckline of a nice blue dress. The double layer was also useful because it was so cold!

By the time I was walking to uni the day had brightened up.

This morning in the studio started like any other... With a cup of tea and tidying my desk!

I spent the morning doing drawings for a new project and working ideas out in my head.

Lunch time! This was a piece of banana loaf my flatmate made that looks a lot like a pork pie! It was far more tasty than it looked though, trust me.

I spent the afternoon in the library, which is something I love doing.

I made some delicious home made lasagne for tea. Lots of leftovers so I'll be eating this for the next few lunches.

After tea I put my iMac to good use and watched The Only Way Is Essex. The new series started this week and it's perfect TV to end a busy day.

An unspoken offering

Exploring silkscreen techniques to produce a range of prints with distorted images. The sexual acts depicted in these prints are difficult to understand at first. Ideally, these would be installed with further visuals and audio which would be reflective of the sensory overload of the acts themselves.

These prints are all unique and have each been produced using a range of different translucent inks and gloss.

Just noticed I'm on my 100th post. Glad to be able to share some news in this update!
Last week I was getting itchy fingers to do some screen printing so I took the day off from other responsibilities and spend the day covered in ink making cards instead!

I have had this idea in my head for a while now, so I was pleased to get the chance to actually make these lovely little cards.

Here are the fifty cards (and some A5 prints) waiting for the next layer of ink. Excuse the poor quality photos, I only had my camera phone with me.

And here are the completed cards on the drying rack1 I had a 100% success rate with these which I think any screenprinter will understand is something to be proud of!

I don't have any high quality photographs of the final designs yet, but I will be posting some in the next few days along with a link to my brand new Etsy store! How exciting! Check back for more information soon.

Over the last few weeks I've been given the chance to work on some personal work. I decided to look into the act of cataloging and collecting along side trying to develop my interest in nature.

Over the course of seven days, I took the beautiful handmade quadrant pictured in the photograph above to the beach pictured in the photograph above, threw it, collected and catalogued everything which was in the 50cm squared space and now I am currently exploring drawing with these 106 items.

Medicinal Curiosities

Here is my piece which is currently on display in the Bradshaw Art Space in Duncan of Jordanstone.

This is the work I have spent the majority of my time on in the last few weeks and I am chuffed with the results. The small book accompanying the lithography print is a catalogue of hand drawn cells and the colour on the print has been hand cut and applied. The exhibition is running until the 19th March so you still have time to go down and have a look around.

Our current brief is based around the medical history of Dundee, scientific pioneers and all things medical. After a quite intense look into the history of the Dundee Royal Infirmary and Lochee Hospital (which I'd never heard of in my whole life of living in Dundee - interesting to research!) I've settled on an other idea. It revolves around cells and the beautiful natural patterns within. Here are a few drawings from today and hopefully they will be part of a much more grand and ambitious idea.

I've been eyeing up lithography for over a year now and I finally got the chance last week to have a go. The end result is messy but interesing and it's definately something I want to try again.

Book colaboration

Last week we were finally able to screen print the colaborative books that were due to be printed before Christmas. It took a while to get into the swing of registering each image correctly but the results were so satisfying. In the the time we had to print the book, Emily (http://emilymaeart.tumblr.com) and myself managed to complete (on schedule!) the entire book and a front cover.

Wall Design

For our first project back after summer, the entire Illustration department has been given the same project. We have been asked to make a design proposal for the wall space in our communal area. After looking at contemporary wall art and graffiti I knew I wanted to design something clean cut and simple.

We were given a short story called 'The Library of Babel' by Jorge Luis Borges to look at and after reading it (and enjoying it a lot more than I thought) and others he had written in a collection called Labyrinths it was obvious that some of the key ideas in his works were that of infinity, labyrinths and the universe. Using constellations and incorporating quotes from selected stories I feel that I have created a successful piece for the brief given and if not that, something I am happy with.

The Illusionist & Scott Pilgrim vs. The World

Yesterday I saw both The Illusionist and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World at the cinema. This is just a little post to recommend both films to anybody who'll listen.

The Illusionist was a fantasticly beautiful film and it was nice recognising places around Edinburgh, which had been wonderfully illustrated. It wasn't exactly what I expected from the writer of the charming Belleville Rendez-Vous but it was lovely none the less.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World was such a massive contrast to The Illustionist. It was loud, colourful and I left the cinema with a massive smile on my face. Also I am in love with Ramona Flowers, or at least her hair. I overheard some girl in the cinema say that she fell asleep but even if you didn't 'get' the film (and I can see how some people wouldn't) I'd say it'd be impossible to fall asleep to something as full on as this.

I am going through to Edinburgh this week for a little holiday with my mum, which will be nice. I was most excited about being able to catch this exhibition while through but sadly, the dates don't match up so I'll need to wait a little longer. If you're in the area I'd recommend it, the artists that I know of who are exhibiting are all very good.

I think I've found myself a new hobby. I remember going and enjoying a good car boot sale/auction with my mum and gran when I was younger but I didn't think it would be even better at this age!

Here's a few of my favourite's purchased today...

An old Halina Super Eight camcorder complete with red corduroy lined case and a pack of film that expired in 1988!

A beautiful wooden box (with a tiny keyhole on the front) which I have already filled to the brim with my paints, perfect! The paper lining the lid says the following...(Click if you want to read it properly)

And an extra little bonus buy for 20p, a pencil tin!

Exhibitions & Galleries in Shetland

Even though we were only in Shetland for seven days, we managed to fit in quite a few museum trips, including Shetland Museum, Bonhoga Gallery, Crofthouse Museum and Quendale Water Mill. Here is a selection of interesting photos snapped in passing.

The current exhibition at the Bonhoga Gallery is Portage: Crossing Points - Digital Jewellery and although interactive craft hasn't been something I've thought about in depth I'm glad I got the chance to see this exhibition.

The three designers exhibiting are Sarah Kettley, Hazel White, and Distance Lab.

The pieces by Sarah Kettley displayed on the (beautiful) pink table are meant to be worn by different people within a group with each necklace able to pick up signals from the others. When a wearer of one of the other necklaces is nearby, a light (with a colour that corresponds to their necklace) will start flashing, getting quicker as they grow closer. I think this is a nice idea because if when you're alone it would be nice to know that your friends are nearby. And it would be handy to be able to avoid people too!

This a video of Mutsugoto by Distance Lab, as it was pretty difficult to photograph. Very nice communication idea though.

My favourite piece in the exhibition was by Hazel White, called Telling Tales, hamefarers kist. It addresses the idea of new technology being used by different generations with small textile pieces being fitted with a computer chip (or something... I'm a bit fuzzy on the technology side of it) and when it's placed on top of the sensor, images stored in the chip are displayed and can be looked through on a touch screen built into the box. Images could be uploaded to each piece through flickr meaning that ,for example, grandparents can keep up to date with what you're doing by what you upload online.

A while back I bought a big stack of plates at the fantastic recycling centre in Dundee and after a few dodgy outcomes getting used to painting on the bizzare surface, I've came out with this. It's a mixture of gouache, acrylic and Dulex kitchen and bathroom (which comes in a handy sample size and has a lovely matte finish).

Loosely based around my work for the Show You're Working show in April. Continuing with the theme of memories and how trees contain them, this was just something I was working on to try and show how the rings of a tree trunk contain indicators to something that's happened at a certain time. Could use a lot more work but these were just for fun.

Or funting, if you will. I've recently had itchy hands and have decided to get more crafty. This is my first attempt at making bunting and although it's not perfect, it was good fun and looks cute!

I've also recently been using a program called Poladroid which is a fun wee thing which lets you turn any image on your computer into a fake polaroid, which although isn't as good as the real thing (obviously!), it's a bit of fun whilst I'm waiting for film to go back into production.

So here's a particularly pretty result of both fun things.

Bookshop Gem

A few days ago I went through to Edinburgh with my boyfriend to see the wonderful Peggy Sue play a gig. We also spent a considerable amount of time in second hand clothes shops and book shops. This was probably my favourite purchase of the day, found in a box labeled "interesting things found inside books".

At first I thought it was just an old air mail envelope which would feel right at home in my box of things for collage but on closer inspection I realised it opened out into a full letter from 8th August 1953, which is pretty spectacular. I've been struggling to make out most of the handwriting but from what I understand the lady who has written it has had some sort of hair disaster amongst other things. Great find!

Buying vintage fabric off of the internet to make some exciting animal cushions! I will post photos of them if they turn out like I want them to.

Buying second hand plates in Dundee's Recycling Emporium, which is the best place in the world. Once again, the results of these plates will be posted if they turn out nicely.

Experimenting with the inks I bought myself as a treat for finishing the second year of my four year course, which is a scary thought.

Exhibition Piece

These two pieces have originated from a project on memories. I found that trees were something that appeared frequently in the places I was recording and in the research I was gathering. Using these, I have been working to create a delicate patter created by the shapes of sky through branches. The idea of handcrafting the patterned piece was also something important to me, as it make it even more personal. The golden branches are used to symbolise the importance of memories which are held within the trees themselves.

Cancer Research Exhibition

The exhibition takes places in the Bonar Hall, just off the Perth Road and runs from Friday 9th April through to Sunday 11th April. I think it'll definately be worth a visit.

Professor Layton and Pandora's Box

After racing through the first Professor Layton game in the series (Professor Layton and the Curious Village), one of my birthday gifts from my boyfriend was the second. In between preparing a piece for exhibition, writing an essay and getting up to general hyjinx, I have managed to complete 7 hours game play in the last few days. I could not recommend it more.

It's been a while since I've played my DS due to it's six month long trip under a bed, but I couldn't help but notice how incredibly charming the drawings and characters are in the game.

Seeing as I was having a big mental mind block regarding my project today, I decided to get my best pal and birthday party sharer, Sarah Finnigan down into my studio for a nice bit of colouring in.

Here is the deliciously colourful end result.

Sorry about the shoddy quality but you get the jist of it. I have been a fan of festive bunting for a while now, it just seems lighten the mood.

I am also very excited about the animal dress up theme of this party, but a little worried about the fact that I'll actually need to make a costume! I'm toying with the idea of bears and birds just now, but who knows!

Given all the bad luck I've had over the last week, including being mega late for Uni on Monday morning and dropping my laptop (£75 repair job. Ouch!), I've really enjoyed myself.

The project which we were set on Monday was to simply create a good drawing. I'd almost forgotten how nice it is to draw just for drawings sake, and not having to think about what's coming next.

On Wednesday it was the lovely Georgia's birthday, which I will post about once I get photographs uploaded, it was wonderful!

Finally! I've got my groove back!

Hopefully I'll be able to use this as more than just a sketchbook peice once I sort out the damned fine lines from my overly sensitive Wacom and maybe go a bit colour crazy.

The more I work on this project (which sadly, isn't as much as I'd like to have) the more I'm tempted by using just digital drawings. But I'll miss painting. Maybe the long process of digital drawing, printing out, painting and then scanning? Sounds good.

I actually think the amount of cameras I have is considered a collection now. My wonderful mother bought me a Lomography Fisheye camera for my christmas and I've just invested in a beautiful gold Pop9 camera from the Urban Outfitter sale!

In the two days since I handed in my portfolio all I have done is sit about on my amazingly comfy bed. Feeling quite lost without mountains of work to do, I've decided to draw or make something every day until I start semester two mid January.

I doubt I'll have the time to post new content on here every day, but expect exciting batches of work every so often.

I really loved working on this sketchbook. I found that limiting my colour choice helped me be more experimental with the imagery and techniques as well as producing a strong aesthetic look.

I am currently doing an interesting project in which I've used the lyrics of Radiohead's A Wolf At The Door to create an emotive and/or narritive piece.

Photo Etching

I had my very first go at photo etching today and decided to take my camera along to record some of the processes and how the plate changes over time. However, I am afraid to say that what I'm etching is being kept top secret at the moment in fear of prying eyes. But when the time is right I'll upload images of my final outcome, which should hopefully be wonderful!

I had been told by many other people that the process of etching takes a lot of patience and waiting around, neither of which are my best past times, so I was expecting the day to be long. However, it's also very exciting and I really enjoyed watching and learning about what the various chemicals do.

Everything ran fairly smoothly and we even managed to churn out a few prints with the hand press. Can't wait until I go back for part two next Monday, I had more fun than I thought I would!

My plate is somewhere in the icy depths of this chemical that looked suspiciously like Blue WKD.

Painting on Wood

I forgot how much I loved painting until I started this piece. There is nothing like lots of thick layers of paint and a textured surface. The tools I used included paintbrushes, a spatula, my fingers, and a plastic knife.
